Donations during #GivingTuesday, November 27th will be TRIPLED!

Triple Your Impact This Year During
November 28, 2017
Dear Harpeth,
Join us again this year as we celebrate #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.
This year, we are shining a light on the great work done by our AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteering in Service to America) Volunteers over the past 4 years. With their goal to grow the capacity of our organization and increase our wildlife education programming, our past VISTAs have been vital in helping us achieve our vision of clean water and healthy ecosystems for the Rivers of Tennessee. The program is also a great way for Harpeth Conservancy to:
  • Provide job training and experience to recent graduates
  • Cultivate the next generation of environmental leaders.
However, this program costs $15,000 to fund one year - a small price to pay for their huge impact. We have a goal to raise $15,000 during #GivingTuesday to fund the VISTA positions for one more year. This funding provides VISTAs with a modest living stipend and professional development training.
Donations given this #GivingTuesday will be TRIPLED thanks to matching funds from the Barbara J Mapp Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation!
All donations, up to $15,000 will be matched on November 28th by the Barbara J Mapp Foundation to support our wildlife education and conservation initiatives. And, donations made through Facebook’s charitable giving tool on November 28th (after 8AM EST) will be matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation up to $50,000 per nonprofit, until the $2 million in matching funds run out.
You have the opportunity to help us fund between one ($15,000) and THREE ($45,000) new AmeriCorps VISTA positions. But we need you to rally and DONATE on November 28th. Stay tuned this week for spotlights and profiles of our VISTAs and the great work they have accomplished over the past five years at Harpeth Conservancy.

The VISTA impact at Harpeth Conservancy:
Since 2013, Harpeth Conservancy has hosted 5 VISTAs working hard to build capacity of the organization and increase our wildlife education programming by:

  • Recruiting, cultivating and creating a volunteer management system;
  • Bolstering HC's aquatic wildlife education programs in classrooms and PEN Pals camp;
  • Fostering connections between citizens and experts to map the presence of unique species, like the streamside salamander habitat, for example;
  • Putting on the Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival;
  • Doing outreach in rural communities and with farmers in order help them get state and federal monies for agricultural best management practices;
  • Launching drug take back program to facilitate the safe disposal of toxic drugs and keep them out of waterways;
  • Leading volunteer restoration and stream cleanup projects;
  • Coordinating wildlife education programs, like the "Lesson on the Harpeth" introducing folks to the Harpeth's diverse aquatic species;
  • ...and much more!

Since 1965, over 220,000 VISTA members have served in all 50 states and U.S. Territories. AmeriCorps VISTA members are in tribal, rural, suburban, and urban communities. The AmeriCorps VISTA mission is to strengthen organizations through volunteering and the mobilization of resources. VISTA’s model is driven directly by communities in need. Whether that need is expanding job-training services for out of work coal miners in Kentucky, recruiting disadvantaged youth for computer literacy and coding classes in Minneapolis, or combating homelessness among our veterans, AmeriCorps VISTA members help others while gaining valuable skills for their career.
